Every time I visit Kencho-ji temple of Kamakura, I always manage to capture some unique images. Last time I was there I arrived just for the daily bronze bells singing, where monks are hitting temple bells in certain order, and the bells are afar from one another, so if you sit in the middle of the temple grounds the effect is incredible. After the bells go silent the monks gather inside one of the temple buildings for a prayer and sutra recitations. They drop a net around windows to seclude themselves from the surrounding world. I could have completely bypass those ropes in the photo but i thought it adds a lot to the mood of the image and send a very special message. To see other travel photos from Kamakura just search the blog for relative posts, there are many of them here.

I selected some photos from past year or so and created a slide show. Those are shots only from Tokyo. I will be creating a similar video that will include all type of artworks that I create (photography, calligraphy, photo manipulations). I am already planing a long timelapse video picturing Tokyo, but I cannot promise you when it will be ready. Timelapses are very time consuming and the end of the year will be rather busy. Watch in HD for best quality, enjoy! My Youtube channel with free photoshop tutorials Photography workshops in Tokyo - click for more details. Today we had the so called Blood Moon in Tokyo caused by a total eclipse. Now, if you know how the moon travels upon the evening sky, you will know the best time to shoot it. Since I do not have a powerful telephoto with a focal length larger than 500mm, which would actually allow me to capture the Moon and fill the frame with it, I do not really see a point in taking shots of a small red dot on the sky. I also well knew that the best time to shoot the autumn moon in Tokyo is after sunset, but if you wait too long, it will go high up on the sky and the whole photo taking idea loses its meaning. So, instead of taking the shot of blood moon, I went for the yellow moon an hour and half before the eclipse, and managed to capture this smashing view of rooftops of central Tokyo from the view deck located near Tokyo station.

Hire a photographer in Tokyo One would think that the great thing about events such as this is that you can shoot photos like mad. Everyone there is an exhibitionist, and they likes to have pictures of themselves taken. Partly it is true, but not in Japan. The organizers made people line up to each cosplayer, then have a quick chat, and then shoot. Now, I wanted to shoot photos of other people taking photos as that is much more fun and interesting. It tells a story instead of being a static posed portrait. I was being bugged every 5 min by the staff, telling me either that I have to line up or that I need permission to shoot. This is so typical for Japan that I didn't even get pissed off. Still, I have managed to grab a few cool photos the way I wanted it, and here is one. Mt friend Tristan helping one of the cosplaying Japanese girls to fix the ribbon of her maid outfit that came loose. Those types of events are a great place to practice your portraiture photography skills, as you have to be quick with reacting and composing, and know your camera well to be able to readjust all the necessary settings on the fly. Model: Aota Yaya (pro cosplayer).

Hire a photographer in Tokyo I have no idea what that is, but it does look like a transformer, or a machine from Pacific Rim movie. Anyhow, looked cool so I took a picture. Actually, it would be fun if this was an official outfit of Tokyo police. They would end each sentence with the word "beep" and it would definitely make more sense. Although Tokyo Game Show is over, it lasted only two days, I will post a few more photos from this event.

Hire a photographer in Tokyo The good thing of living in Tokyo is that there are tons of events going on every day. So, today, together with Tristan from Amazing Japan hit the Tokyo Game Show 2014 in Makuhari Messe. The event is massive, and occupies the space of 9 exhibition halls, and there are literally thousands of people there. For me personally, the most interesting was hall 9, with all the cosplay models. Sadly, whoever organised this event, has no knowledge of how light is important for photography, and placed all the cosplay models under a roof, and half of them stood up against a concrete wall. Seriously retarded idea. Nonetheless I managed to capture a few interesting shots, and here is one of them. Model's name was Akari.

Hire a photographer in Tokyo Here is another shot from the NASA and JAXA expo in Tokyo's Makuhari Messe exhibition halls. If you are in Tokyo then it is not a bad place to visit. Lots of genuine items that have seen the outer space, lots of full size replicas, like the Apollo 17, and so on. There are 100s of places to go and 100s of things to do in Tokyo, and this expo is not a must see, but it is fun and it is definitely something that you won't see every day. For me it was great, because I could shoot a lot of stock photos for my cyborg photoshop manipulatio project. Large tripods aren't allowed, but I think you could get away with a small one. Also, the official website says that you cannot photograph certain items, but I took photos of everything and so were the other people, and no one was objecting, so I gather that you can shoot anything in there. Besides, how many times you have a chance to snap a selfie in a space suit helmet's glass?

Hire a photographer in Tokyo Summers in Tokyo are mad hot and humid. It will be really warm till the end of September, but today the heat is gone, and the temperature is down to 21 degrees Celsius. Humidity is still at 88%, ugh. I am dying to welcome winter. I am repacking my gear after a photo shoot, and I am thinking of hitting Tokyo for some evening shots fun. Below is a photo of fireworks that I took recently in Yokuska, together with a bunch of other photographers. Fireworks are happening all over Japan during summer, and most of the events attracts a sea of people. I am not a fan of crowded places, but fireworks are something that I enjoy to watch and photograph.

I live really close to the Makuhari Messe International Convention Centre, I decided to pop out today to visit the NASA and JAXA (Japanese Space Exploration Agency) exhibition. The place is OK, lots of replicas, a few original items, but my main aim there was to shoot photos for my cyborg and android photoshop manipulation project. So I was focusing on space craft interiors, like the replica of Apollo 17 Command Module, and the KIBO experimental module (on the photo below). I snapped almost 700 photos of everything and anything, engine parts, electronic modules, etc. I think I have tons of stock photos for my upcoming cyber fun.
Shooting fireworks is not really that difficult, although it does require a few items. You will need a tripod, remote shutter release cable or a remote controller for your camera, a good spot to shoot from, and both wide and telephoto lenses. Now the camera settings, well, I saw many tutorials that suggest shooting at 400-200 ISO, and I say, go as low as you can. The photo you see here was shot at 50 ISO. Lower ISO - less noise. Aperture - this really depends, but you do not want to use a wide open aperture (like F2.8 or F4), because fireworks are really bright, so it is easy to overexpose the shots. I think I started at F11 and went down to F16. Remember, the finale is always VERY bright, as all hell breaks loose, so you might want to close the aperture even down to F22 or so. Shutter speed is the most tricky one to determine, as the best way to go is to set it to BULB mode, which is why you need that remote shutter cable thingie. The rest is a trial and error really, the way I shoot is i open the shutter when I see the trail of a firework going up, and then close it just before the bloom starts to fade (below photo was shot at F16, ISO 50, and 7s exposure). You can use other methods like manually defocusing the lens, zooming in, or covering the lens between the blooms with your hand. I will make a video tutorial on how to edit firework shots in photoshop, and will post it on my photoshop and photography tutorials Youtube channel. Happy shooting! Photo location: Yokuska.
