There is no such thing as bad light. You just need to know what to do in different light conditions. Hard strong sunlight into the camera is perfect for either backlit portraits, fun with flares or silhouette photography. This is an old photo of mine but I gave it a completely new look. I often revisit my older shots and re-edit them to give them a new look. I took this shot sitting in Oosambashi pier in Yokohama, waiting for the sun to go down so I can shoot the Minato Mirai night view, and I saw people dashing about back and forth. The pier goes up and then rapidly down so it creates an illusion of a fake horizon or edge or some sort. Passing people were forming interesting patterns especially when compressed with a telephoto lens. Oosambashi peir is a really cool place to pursue all types of photography so if you are visiting Yokohama, you should definitely go there. Visit my portfolio to see this shot in full resolution. Fine art photography is a fancy way of saying a photograph shot and post processed in a way that it expresses artist's style, idea, etc. It does not have to be black and white, though first fine art photographs were, and perhaps that is why this phrase is always associated with monochromatic art of capturing light on film, and nowadays, sensor. Well, here is my fine art photograph of Yokohama's Minato Mirai harbour. I love Yokohama. It is airy, has wide streets, wonderful architecture, and it is way more laid back than Tokyo, even if it is a part of Greater Tokyo Metropolis. I applied a vignette the photo, in a way to make it appear borderless and open. Even though it is a night shot, it is bright and full of life, yet t the same tranquil and peaceful. One of my favourite city views in Japan
One of my favourite spots in Greater Tokyo - Yokohama. The city of wide streets, laid back atmosphere, great views, and thousands of places to hunt down with your camera. Yokohama is really close to central Tokyo, so if you are in the vicinity, and you want to take some stunning photos, it should be on your must-see-it places. Here is a colourful shot of the Yokohama's Minatomirai (lit. Harbour of the Future), with a very photogenic sailboat Nippon Maru, and Yokohama Landmark Tower in the background.
I am not sure if I have ever posted this photograph before, but I something tells me that I haven't. Anyways, I re-edited this photo from scratch when I was making my new photoshop tutorial on how to remove the camera sensor dust from the photos, so I thought I will go ahead and write a short article, and post this shot. Minatomirai in Yokohama is one of my favourite photographing places in Greater Tokyo. In fact, the entire Yokohama is really cool, so if you are visiting Tokyo, make sure to jump on the train and check it out.
Mausoleum dedicated to one of the generals of Late Han Dynasty, named Guan Yu, who played a significant role during the war which led to the collapse of the Han Dynasty. The mausoleum gate and the main building is lavishly decorated with wooden sculptures of dragons, minatures, and scenes from the Han Dynasty era. It is one of the main attractions in the Yokohama China Town.
I caught this scene in Yokohama around 7 o'clock in the morning near the Minato Mirai. There was absolutely no pople around, and they were shooting this in a secluded spot. I managed to grab a few shots before I was infomed that it is a promo shoot for a new Japanese fantasy costume thingie, you know, one of those eye-poking red and yellow spandex karate-wannabie disasters that you would not watch even if your life depended on it. In any case, I have no idea what is the tiltle of this particular show, all I was told that it will be aired in Japan early spring this year. In any case, this is quite a unique scene, so I figured it will make an interesting photo.
Although Yokohama is technically a stand-alone city, it is a part of the Greater Tokyo Metropolis, which stretches over a length of 100km. When you travel on train from Tokyo to Yokohama, you have no idea where one city ends and the other begins. It is a sea of concrete, roads and people. Then again, Yokohama has a very different feel to it than Tokyo. It seems more relaxed, wide and airy. Yokohama's Minato Mirai is one of my favourite places to visit, especially at night, and the best time to photograph it is during the winter months, when the air isn’t very humid, and the visibility is great for shooting cityscapes.
Minato Mirai (lit. Future Port or Port of the Future) is hands down one of the coolest spots in Yokohama. You have everything there, the views, the shops, the restaurants, the attractions, the theme park, the sea, the harbour, the street performers on a daily basis, the outdoor 3D cinema, and so on. For me, however, the main focus each time I go there is the architecture and people. I love shooting in Yokohama, it is so much different than Tokyo. One of the things I enjoy photographing is the massive steel sculpture / structure in in the Queen's Square area. One place, thousands of angles - brilliant.
With 150 years of history, Yokohama China town (横浜中華街) is one of the largest in the world, and the largest in Asia. Once you pass under the red gates of China town you suddenly find yourself in a completely different world. The smell of dumplings and tea, the sounds, the architecture, the people, the commotion, the language, everything changes dramatically. Whenever I want to escape the craziness of Tokyo, Yokohama is the place that never disappoints me. There is always something cool and refreshing to be found there.
