If you are into photography or cinematography I am sure that at some point you have heard the phrase golden hour or magic hour. It is a term that defines the warm and soft sunlight which happens just after sunrise or shortly before sunset, when the sun angle is at the steepest. The reason for this type of light being simply amazing is twofold. One is that the light itself is much softer and warmer, and it produces less harsh shadows, and two is that it amplifies textures without making them look rough. The sun at such a low angle is being defused by a massive chunk of atmosphere that it has to piece through, which is also why its color is much redder and warmer. All in all, that is the most amazing time to take almost any photos, but especially landscapes, cityscape shots and portraits. This portrait that you see below was taken by me during one of the private photography workshops that I led here in Tokyo, and I took it to explain a few interesting things, like back light, exposure locking technique, and how to shoot against the sun smiling straight through the lens.
